Spring Workshop Series

Cape Breton Step with Kelly MacArthur

19 May 2024 @ 3pm-4:30pm EDT* (New York) on Zoom

Cape Breton Step Dance is a percussive form of dance well known to the Island of Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. The base of the style came from Scotland with the early immigrants in the 1700’s, and it thrived and survived on the island due to its remote location and lack of outside influence  in early times. Over the years, Scotland became very influenced by outsiders, due to easy travel around Europe, and therefore saw a change in many of its early Scottish traditions - some were lost completely. The style in Cape Breton now has become unique to the island, keeping the Scottish basics, but having been influenced by the communities where it remained. It is predominately danced to Puirt à beul (Mouth Music), bagpipes or fiddles - accompanied by piano and guitar. These styles of Cape Breton music & dance are renowned on the island, and are a large part of the Island culture and tourism. Cape Breton Step Dance is all about rhythm and musicality, the steps matching the tunes, mainly danced on the spot to Strathspeys, Jigs and Reels.

Learn a bit about your teacher, Emanuele Oliveira

My name is Emanuele Oliveira, I'm a state public employee, a wife, a mother of 2 and someone absolutely in love with dance since I know myself. My dance formation is based in Classical Ballet (Vaganova Method) and in Irish Dancing with all the 12 levels of exams at An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG) completed in 2017.

As a former ballet dancer, I’ve started teaching Irish Dancing in 2010. My experience as a professional dancer involves other dance styles and arts as jazz, aerial silks, tap dance and theatre. In 2020, just before the first lockdown, I returned back from Scotland with my SDTA Associates and started Highland Dance Brasil School or (in Portuguese), Escola Brasileira de Danças Escocesas - the very first Highland dancing school in Brazil under the RSOBHD rules. In the same year I took several workshops focused in the North Ireland's Irish Dancing style with Lauren Smith (former Lead Dancer at Riverdance).

In terms of performances Highland Dance Brasil has a partnership with Brasil Caledonia Pipe Band, a Scottish bagpipe and percussion band from São Paulo, and the Scottish Cultural Outreach Foundation, for joint performances. Among the performances highlighted in my career are: Rock in Rio 2013 (United Kingdom Stage - Brazil), World Irish Dancing Championships – USA and Ireland (2013 and 2017), Santiago Cup Highland Dancing - Chile (2018), South America Pipe Band Gathering - Argentina Highland Echoes Christmas Show - Brazil (Principal dancer - 2021), Highland Echoes The Show (North Carolina, USA – 2023), several performances at the Irish Consulate in São Paulo – Brazil (since 2011) and the at United Kingdom Embassy, in Brasília.
